Brendan Fevola has shared details of his shock health scare after losing 30 kilograms by keeping to a strict diet and fitness regime.
The AFL great, 43, recently told how he’s shed a quarter of his body weight in the past 12 months in a huge health overhaul.
However, he has now revealed that he had an unexpected health scare earlier this week after his heart rate suddenly crashed on Monday.
Speaking on-air on Tuesday, Brendan told how he uses a heart monitoring app on his phone, which showed his rate plunge while he exercised before spiking to worrying levels as he sat in an arm chair.
He said the alarming results prompted him to go and get a health check, becoming concerned after two of his friends tragically died from sudden heart attacks.
‘Yesterday, I went and got a health check,’ he told his co-hosts on Fox FM’s Fifi, Fev and Nick breakfast show.
‘Two mates have had heart attacks and I’ve had two that have died from them,’ he said matter-of-factly. ‘They were my age and out of nowhere… just dropped.’
The radio host explained that his heart rate should’ve been higher and usually sits at about 120 BPM (beats per minute) when he’s getting his midday workout in.

However, Brendan (pictured in January) has now revealed that he had an unexpected health scare earlier this week after his heart rate suddenly crashed after exercising on Monday
‘I’ve got a heart monitor app on my phone, where you put your finger on the screen and it takes your pulse,’ he explained.
‘I went to go do the 1,000 steps the other day, and I literally couldn’t breathe. [My heart rate] was like 63… it was the lowest it’s ever been.’
Brendan said his wife Alex expressed her concerns that the fluctuations meant there was ‘no oxygen getting to [his] heart’ when he was exercising, prompting him to get a full health screening.
‘We both thought I was fit,’ he joked of the low heart rate during his run. ‘And then when I got home and I was on my recliner, I checked and it was 120 just sitting there.’
After undergoing blood tests and an ECG, which test the heart’s function, Brendan revealed he was surprised and relieved to learn that everything was normal.
‘I checked for diabetes, cholesterol, prostate, I got iron, I got kidney, I got liver…,’ he shared.
‘The doctor said the only thing she’d advise is that my stress levels are a bit high and I need to relax. She said don’t rely on the apps. They’re pretty good but not perfect.’
Brendan went on to stress the importance of men over the age of 40 getting health checks and told how he had been concerned after getting chest pains.
‘I think think it’s really important people go and get health checks, but especially males over 40. Because men don’t worry about health,’ he added.

‘I’ll be like “Oh my heart’s sore, it’ll go away” and that’s mentally what we think because we’re stupid people.’
Last week, Brendan detailed his recent 30kg weight loss and told how he was ‘feeling great’ on the keto diet after shedding 9kg in a fortnight.
The keto diet is a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet that aims to get the body into a state of ketosis where it burns fat for fuel, which helps induce weight loss.
A recent study by Harvard University Health, published in March 2024, warned that the ‘weight-loss wonder’ is not something to experiment with because ‘it’s actually a medical diet that comes with serious risks’.
Among those risks is increased heart rate as a side effect of ketosis, according to Healthline.
Speaking about his weight loss journey last week, Brendan said he was ‘two weeks in’ to trying keto after other diets and felt ‘amazing’.
‘It’s no carbs, no sugar. I’m not really a sugar person, so I don’t really eat chocolates that much.’

Brendan added he was enjoying trying out new foods as part of his diet and said he was already noticing some incredible – and unexpected – benefits.
‘I’ll be having cauliflower rice, cauliflower mash with like the meat. I’m having salmon, fish, chicken. The food’s actually beautiful, it’s everything I eat but taking out the carbs,’ he shared.
‘I literally walk down the street now and people are like, “Is that him Fev!”, because I’m fading away. Last year I got up to 128kg, which is very heavy.
‘By the time I finish this, I’ll be under my playing weight at Carlton. I’ll be around the same weight.’
